Western Union Co-Sponsored the Latino Inaugural Gala in Washington, DC

On January 18th, Western Union (a MAG client), co-sponsored the Latino Inaugural Gala which took place at Union Station in Washington, DC. The event attracted over 4,000 people, including a who’s who of Latino celebrities and elected officials from across the country. Co-hosts of the event included the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI), the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) and Voto Latino. All proceeds raised from the 2009 Latino Inaugural Gala went to support the creation of the National Museum of the American Latino in Washington, D.C.

MAG’s Managing Partner to serve on the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Board of Directors

Ruben Alvarez was recently appointed to serve on the Board of Directors for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Desert Mountain Chapter. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. LLS’s mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $600 million in research specifically targeting blood cancers.

Ruben states “I lost one of my brothers to Leukemia over ten years ago, so being involved in this effort is especially important to me. I look forward to helping the organization assist people battling with cancer.” For more information about the organization, please visit www.lls.org/DMS.

Sheila Harris to serve on Board for LAI

Sheila Harris was recently selected as Board Member of the Phoenix Chapter of Lambda Alpha International (LAI.)  Dr. Harris will serve as Vice President of Programs.  LAI is a professional association of professionals working in land economics from diverse disciplines.  Members have a minimum of 10 years of experience in land economics.

Aíxa Garcia Mont was recently hired as Project Coordinator for MAG. She was born in Puerto Rico and has spent her life between the Southwest and Puerto Rico. She earned her Bachelors degree in Sociology from the University of Puerto Rico and her Masters degree in Education from Arizona State University. Aíxa is greatly interested in education issues, especially those of Latinas/os and other underrepresented minorities. Aíxa hopes to earn a PhD in the near future in Education Reform and work in Education Policy.
